Bread and Butter Bakeshop: A Local Legends Story

Bread and Butter Bakeshop began with a mother's desire to help her daughter's health through sourdough baking. Today, the family-run cottage bakery creates handcrafted sourdough breads, cakes, and granola while sharing faith, serving the Central Florida community, and selling out at local farmers markets.

Their story

When my daughter was a baby, she had terrible eczema. I was researching about ways to heal her that were not steroid creams and chemicals. I stumbled on using things to change her gut health and decided to try sourdough bread making. My stepdaughter Lilly‘s birthday was coming up so I made a promise that I would have a loaf ready for her birthday. What started as something I thought I would dabble in, took over when my daughter‘s eczema completely went away. It was then I decided to start sharing with friends, which grew into a fun porch pick up business. I sold to church members, friends and family. I was also a preschool teacher, so I was doing this during the off times. My hobby and passion soon turned into something that was creating money for my family. And the best part was I was able to stay home with my daughter and she could help me!

This year, we decided that I would not be returning as a Preschool teacher and began farmers markets with really no idea what would happen. In a matter of weeks we realize that our product was unique, and most importantly, planned and ordained by God. We use our little tent to share delicious baked goods and the good news about Jesus!

We are currently selling out at all the farmers markets we attend. Growth has been so significant that we’ve added ovens, fridges and supplies to our cottage bake shop. What once started as a way to help my immediate family feel my love and get healthy, turned into something I could never dream of! ONLY GOD!

What makes them unique

Our business is unique because everything we do is handcrafted and made from sourdough. We offer sourdough breads with fun inclusions, sourdough granola with mixed nuts and cranberries, and a variety of sourdough cakes! We don’t believe in taking any shortcuts and craft of bread making is important. The details matter, from how we bake the bread, to double fermenting each loaf for an increased amount of prebiotics, to using quality ingredients. We stand out at the farmers markets because our loaves are family sized, at around 30 ounces. Jaclyn uses prep time to connect with God, so prayer is always baked in as well!

A challenge they have overcome

Our biggest challenge has been keeping up with the demand.

A proud moment

I have three girls, and I love that they can see me work hard, involve God, and be an entrepreneur achieving work life balance. I want them to know that it is an option for them to maintain a household, and also follow your passions and hobbies!

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

As long as you involve Jesus in business decisions, you will succeed.

What is next

I am very excited to secure the ovens which will cut my bake time down significantly so I can focus on other menu items or even just take a trip to Disney with my family!
